After settling a trademark dispute with Epic Games, Nreal is reportedly preparing to rebrand itself as Xreal.

Chinese AR headset maker Nreal is likely to rebrand itself as Xreal, according to media reports. The rebranding is said to be the result of a trademark dispute with Epic Games that was settled out of short last year. There are no official statements from Nreal yet.

Xreal: Background of the name change

Epic sued Nreal and its parent company in 2021, claiming that the Nreal brand infringed on its trademark rights to the Unreal Engine. In April 2022, the companies reached an out-of-court settlement, and the lawsuit was finally dismissed in August.

The terms of the settlement remain confidential. However, there are some indications that the agreement includes a renaming of Nreal.

New hardware product: Xreal Beam

In April, Nreal filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a new hardware product called “Xreal Beam”.

Images in the application show an external computing unit with an Xreal logo and a product label of the same name. Noticeably, the new logo uses the same font as previous Nreal logos.

The device appears to be a successor to the Nreal Streaming Box, which should make the Nreal Air AR headset more compatible with a wider range of smartphones. In addition, an “XREAL Air Adapter” has appeared on Amazon Germany, which enables a Lightning to HDMI connection.

Internationally, Nreal most recently attracted attention with a new, slim display headset. The Nreal Air became popular primarily as a Steam Deck accessory, projecting games from the handheld’s 7-inch screen onto a 130-inch virtual canvas.
